The story of See You in the Everywhere
I began this painting the day after my friend of 27 years, Lynn, died. It was a tribute to her. I’ve always believed our loved ones are never truly gone — they’re somehow, always, everywhere. But that morning, after months of dreading it, the moment had finally arrived. She was really gone.
The sadness gave the painting a dusky, “light going down” feeling. Yet even in the grief, there’s a light that never fades. Lynn wouldn’t have approved of a painting without hope. Even at her worst, she believed in positivity and joy. I tried to carry that into the piece.
I battled with getting the river right for days, wishing I could show Lynn to get her thoughts. But my Adviser-in-Chief was no longer here. My sadness turned into frustration, then fury — at life, at the universe, at cancer. I was mourning not just her death, but every future moment I’d never get to share with her.
Then, the idea came. I needed to say goodbye. I wrote a secret message to Lynn in the river — messy and imperfect — just for her.
And suddenly, the painting was finished. It became what I needed it to be: a goodbye, and a promise to carry her light forward.
If you’ve ever loved and lost, I hope this piece reminds you that beauty can still be found in sorrow — and that the light of someone you love never truly goes out.
