The story of Pink Panorama
I started this painting by covering the entire board in fluorescent bubblegum pink. From there, the landscape slowly began to reveal itself through the vibrant pink mist. It felt less like painting and more like excavation—like the image was waiting underneath, and I just had to uncover it.
This was one of those blissful painting sessions where the world disappears. I put on my playlist of The Jam and got completely lost in singing along (badly) while moving paint around. Hours passed without me noticing. When I finally looked up, this painting was just… there. I have no memory of making specific choices. It simply arrived. Maybe that’s why it remains one of my favourites—because it feels completely instinctive, unfiltered, and joyful. It’s a direction I hope to return to.
Technically, the vibrant pink I started with is known as a ‘ground’—a base layer that sets the tone. Pink grounds have a long and illustrious history. Renoir, Mary Cassatt, Whistler, Egon Schiele, and Rothko all used them to create a warm glow and unify colour.
This painting invites you to connect with that sense of joyful spontaneity and discovery. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most vibrant moments come when we stop trying to control and simply let creativity flow. Maybe it will inspire you to find your own unexpected bursts of colour and joy, even on the dullest days.
